California houses five professional baseball franchises, more than any other state. Los Angeles is home to the Angels and Dodgers, joining the Oakland A’s, the San Diego Padres, and the San Francisco Giants.

The Dodgers franchise dates back to 1884. However, the team played in Brooklyn until 1958. The relocation worked wonders, yielding a World Series championship in 1959 and additional trophies in 1963 and 1965. The franchise won six of its seven titles in LA. The Angels, by comparison, have played 63 seasons in Los Angeles, with the franchise’s lone World Series victory coming in 2002 over the Giants.

Next, the Giants have enjoyed success in California. Like the Dodgers, the franchise began in New York. The Giants won seven of the 16 championship series in New York and added three World Series wins and three additional World Series appearances as a San Francisco team.

Another California transplant, the Oakland Athletics, began as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901. The team won multiple championships in Philadelphia but has also enjoyed great success in California. The A’s won three straight World Series between 1972 and 1974. A second run of three successive World Series showings netted another championship in 1989. The Padres franchise began in 1969 but has yet to make a World Series appearance.
